Album Review thread

Postby iron9567 » Thu Oct 15, 2009 6:47 pm

I seen this idea on another site and thought it would be a good idea. The idea is to post reviews of any album you like or dislike. If you choose to post in this thread. The minimum we ask for is the artist name, album title, and track list. Anything past that is up to you. Can't wait to see what some of you all will post in this thread. Also if you don't have a review to post but want to post your opinion on a posted review. Then don't hesitate to debate about that album review.
Thanks

BRAND NEW EYES by Paramore

Track listing:

- Careful
- Ignorance
- Playing God
- Brick by boring brick
- Turn it off
- The only exception
- Feeling sorry
- Looking up
- Where the lines overlap
- Misguided ghosts
- All I wanted

- - - - - -

The album starts off with a so-so poppier song by the band, Hayley singing and hitting the high notes with ease. At first sound, they seem to have matured a little bit, but still adorning their Riot sound. Probably to keep Riot fans happy and to draw people in to listen to their other songs afterward.

Careful is followed by a sudden Ignorance, creating their very distinct sound of ''Hard, but not too hard''. I simply love this song, the chorus is so catchy and the lyrics are cool :)

Next comes Playing God, seemingly slower and more laid back than Ignorance. The song is about religious people who blame everyone else, when they are infact the ones causing trouble by how they're pointing at everyone else (''next time you point a finger, i'll put you to the mirror''). I have to say this is my favourite song on the album so far, tied with All I wanted. It is such a catchy, mature song.

Afterwards comes Brick by boring brick, the bands second planned single from the album. I'm not too keen on this song, the music is a bit to... un-paramore-ish for me :/ The chorus doesn't really have a catch to it, and the lyrics are... meh.

Turn it off then plays. First impressions? They have grown up. Their music sounds so much more mature here. The lyrics are good, and the song is catchy, especially the chorus.

The only exception seems to be Paramores attempt of a slowie for the album, being the third planned single from BNE. I think that the song is pulled off quite well, with the guitar and her powerful voice, despite the cheesy and sloppy lyrics. This, imo, isn't a sound from Paramore I like. I prefer their slow songs from Riot (When it rains, we are broken).

Feeling sorry is perhaps the heaviest song on the record. Mix Hayleys vocals and the heavy music together and what do you get? Awesomeness.

I didn't think much of Looking up when I first heard it, but it sounds like one of those songs that'll grow on me. The lyrics are pretty good, and the music is an 8/10.

Where the lines overlap is perhaps the only song on this album I can say I dislike. The sound is irritating, and her voice when it goes shakey annoys the hell out of me for some reason :/

Next comes the better-of-the-two-slow-songs-on-Brand-New-Eyes: Misguided ghosts. This is song is great. Lyrics are great and truthful, and the folk-sound it has is also good and they pull it off well.

All I wanted is my second favourite on BNE. Why? The lyrics are good, the singing is top notch, and the music is wonderful, as nearly-always. The note she hits about 3/4 of the way through is amazingly breathtaking.

And lastly there is decode, the Twilight-frenzy song which arguably made Paramore 'famous'-er. This song is okay, but nothing special.

Album rating: Altogether, i'd give BNE an 7 or 8 out of 10. Their new maturity is good, and it's nice to see them trying new things, but I still miss the catchy power-pop from AWKIF and Riot!

This is War released by 30 Seconds to Mars on December 8, 2009

1. "Escape" — 2:24
2. "Night of the Hunter" — 5:41
3. "Kings and Queens" — 5:48
4. "This Is War" — 5:27
5. "100 Suns" — 1:58
6. "Hurricane" — 6:12
7. "Closer to the Edge" — 4:34
8. "Vox Populi" — 5:43
9. "Search and Destroy" — 5:39
10. "Alibi" — 6:00
11. "Stranger in a Strange Land" — 6:54
12. "L490" — 4:26

30 Seconds to Mars follows up their sophomore effort "A Beautiful Lie" with an even more beautiful delivery. This album takes their old hard rocking sound and lets it shine and glimmer amidst a sonic landscape invented by Flood and Steve Lillywhite (producers). 30stm makes a move away from their roots towards a more progressive rock/synth rock based sound and it comes out beautifully on their longer songs. The album opens up with a synth that emulates a monk chant, and slowly builds up and drops off again until it explodes into a choir singing "This is War!". While 30stm seems to have overindulged themselves on this album replete with a song featuring Kanye West and a children's choir on several songs along with a very synth based sound, there is a lot of rocking fun to be found on this album. Highlights include single "Kings and Queens", pre-release "This is War", the Kanye track "Hurricane", "Closer to the Edge" and "Vox Populi" (basically the middle of the record). Lyrics attempt to convey a much more optimistic band, and it definitely comes across. Jared Leto tackles the concept of war throughout the album, so be prepared to hear "this is war!" a few times. But he also handles the concept of sexuality on "Stranger in a Strange Land" and also faith. All in all, a very mature effort and although overproduced, Jared's vocals retain their rawness on his scream/shouts.

Just wanted to clarify something. "Playing God" isn't about religious people. It's about her relationship with Josh, the lead guitarist, and he was "playing God".
